Nestled beneath the shade of pecan trees in the heart of South Carolina's Lowcountry, Pecan Point is more than a historic home. It is a place where history has been preserved, family traditions continue to grow, and every guest becomes part of its story.
Known for generations as Pick Pocket Plantation, the property has been a recognizable part of Beaufort's history for over a century. Owned by a local family for nearly one hundred years, the plantation served as a working farm surrounded by pecan groves, open fields, barns, and outbuildings that reflected the agricultural heritage of the Lowcountry. The historic farmhouse that stands today, built in the late nineteenth century, remains one of Beaufort's most distinctive homes, with its wraparound porches, widow's walk, heart pine floors, and timeless Southern character.
By the early 2000s, however, the future of Pecan Point was uncertain. Years of neglect had left the home in severe disrepair, and demolition seemed inevitable.
Every historic home needs someone willing to believe in it. For Pecan Point, that person was John Keith.
Where many saw a house beyond saving, John saw possibility. He saw craftsmanship worth protecting, history worth preserving and a home worth saving..A lifelong entrepreneur, preservationist, craftsman, and visionary, John had already dedicated much of his life to restoring historic buildings. He believed that every old home deserved another chance and that preserving the past was one of the greatest gifts you could leave for future generations.
The restoration of Pecan Point became one of his greatest passions. Over the next several years, he poured countless hours into bringing the home back to life. Much of the structure had to be rebuilt, yet every decision reflected his commitment to preserving its historic character. His eye for detail, and remarkable creativity transformed a home that many believed was beyond saving into one of Beaufort's treasured historic properties.
But those who knew John know that the house was never his greatest accomplishment.
His greatest legacy was the life he lived.
John was a man of unwavering Christian faith whose love for the Lord shaped every part of his life. His faith wasn't something he simply spoke about, it was something he lived each day through his kindness, humility, generosity, integrity, and genuine love for others. He had a servant's heart, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or quietly do what needed to be done without expecting recognition. His life was a testimony that inspired countless friends, neighbors, family members, and everyone blessed enough to know him.
John also had an extraordinary gift for seeing potential where others could not. Whether restoring a forgotten historic home, rebuilding an old piece of furniture, or dreaming about what a property could become, his creativity seemed endless. He had a rare ability to imagine possibilities that others overlooked, and through hard work, determination, and faith, he brought those visions to life. His passion for preserving history has left a lasting mark on Beaufort that will continue to be enjoyed for generations.
To his family, however, John was so much more than a preservationist or visionary.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and the most incredible Grandad anyone could have hoped for. His five grandchildren adored him beyond words and cherished every moment they spent by his side. Whether they were helping with one of his many projects, listening to his stories, learning from his wisdom, sharing a meal around the table, laughing at one of his jokes, or simply riding along on one of his many adventures, every moment with Papa became a memory they will treasure for a lifetime.
One thing everyone loved most about him was his joy. He had a natural happiness that was simply contagious. He had a gift for finding humor in everyday moments, and before long, everyone around him would be laughing right along with him. It wasn't uncommon for family gatherings to end with tears streaming down our faces because we had laughed so hard. Those moments of joy became some of our greatest treasures and are memories we'll carry with us forever.
For John's daughter, caring for Pecan Point is far more than preserving a historic home. It's carrying forward the legacy of the man she admired most. They shared an extraordinary father-daughter bond and were truly the best of friends, always creating, and working side by side.
Today, she proudly continues the vision her father began, inspired by his faith, wisdom, creativity, and love for both his family and this special place. Together with her husband and their children, she is committed to honoring his legacy by preserving not only the home he so lovingly restored, but also the values he lived by every day, ensuring his story and spirit continue for generations to come.
John's presence is still felt throughout Pecan Point Plantation. It can be seen in every restored room, every carefully preserved detail, every porch that welcomes friends and family, and every corner of the property that bears the fingerprints of his vision. Though he is deeply missed every single day, his legacy continues to live on not only in this historic home, but in the lives of those he loved, the community he served, and the family who is honored to carry his dream forward.
Today, we welcome every guest with the same spirit that John lived by: a spirit of faith, hospitality, gratitude, and genuine warmth.
